Albany, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 31,857 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. The name originated from the Alamo and Albany Creek settlements. Albany was first settled by Europeans in 1821 as part of Rancho Cucamonga Mission Viejo land grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza. In 1824, Albany sold its claim to Rancho Santiago for $10 per acre. In 1860, the town of Albany was founded by James Waddell on land granted to him by José Joaquin Murieta y Arreola withdrawn from Rancho Sinaloa Grant #2 due to opposition from Mexico City over Indian status changes that year. A post office called Albany was established in 1865 and remained in operation until 1913. The town's growth accelerated during the late 19th century due to railroad construction along the Mojave Desert Railway which reached Albany via an spur route northeast of Palm Springs Junction on February 14, 1892 (the day after Railroad mogul George Hearst opened his new citrus empire). By 1912 there were over 100 businesses intown plus two hotels and six churches/orphans homes between downtown and Palm Springs Junction; also a school, two newspapers and a small movie theater were built or soon added across Broadway Street between First Avenue east of Main Street (now University Boulevard) and Second Avenue southeast of State Route 16 (now Interstate 10). Railroads continue to play an important role in local economy with commuter service running through town southward into Riverside County providing access to Stockton and other major cities while occasional long-distance services are provided by Amtrak through Empire Builder trains passing through downtown on their way northward from Los Angeles or points east via Riverside Station outside town limits

Albany was founded in 1824 by Ishmael Smith and his brother-in-law, George Perkins. The city grew rapidly during the gold rush of California, and by 1860 it had a population of over 20,000. Albany became an incorporated town in 1872, and its first mayor was John S. Hylan. In 1914, the city hosted the World's Fair and saw a population growth rate of 50%. In 1932, Mayor Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Al Capone as head of the New York City Organized Crime Commission; Albany played no role in these events but is often mentioned as one of the most criminal cities in America. In 1965, Albany merged with Fresno to form the Fresno metropolitan area; however, this merger did not result in any significant changes to the city's demographics or economy. In 2002, Albany was again placed on track for rapid growth after passage of Measure K (a $5 million bond issue) that increased spending on public transportation and infrastructure within the city limits. This investment has led to a recorded increase in property values within Albany since 2004 - now totaling over $190 million - which has helped to support continued large-scale job growth throughout recent years.
