In 1821, it became part of Mexico as part of Alta California under General Vicente Guerrero. On December 14, 1848, it became an open-air port on Lake Tahoe when it was opened by Commodore John C. Fremont during his explorations of southern California In 1862–63, following the Mexican-American War and years of unrestrained gold mining throughout much of northern and central America (), Governor Hiram Johnson called for military relief to suppress bandits operating between Sacramento and Stockton that had been destroying property since early 1861 (). The result was what is now known as "Johnson's War", which lasted from 1862 until 1865 (). Albany's small population (under 10,000) helped contribute little to this massive effort (); however, its location made it a natural step-up for commanders with their headquarters located nearby at Elko Barracks () and Fort Point Mirabeau (). A new post office was established at Albany on November 15, 1865; this led to increased development around the post office including taverns and brothels that dotted what would become one of downtown Albany's busiest streets—the Prospect Street Wharf area today home to several restaurants including Applebee's and Burger King. In 1868 Republican James Buchanan won election as governor against Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt; Buchanan appointed Hiram Johnson attorney general with control over various law enforcement functions within New York State through his department —a power still exercised by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg today). With business opportunities increasing along Prospect Street Wharf during these years (), numerous warehouses were built along Mare Island Naval Shipyard Boulevard () just south of I-680), which anchored town’s commercial district for nearly 50 years until they were replaced by newer buildings subsequent to 1990’s suburbanization trend in southeastern Orange County(). A portion of downtown Albany fell victim to arson in 1903; however damage done by vandals nine years later more than made up for any lostaina caused by arsonists [-1]. A series of bombings began on October 25, 1951 which targeted other institutions but did no physical damage: local businesses did not have time or resources available to rebuild quickly enough so that crime rates returned almost immediately to pre-bombing levels (−2). Union Pacific Railroad also experienced some vandalism during this period (-3). After many decades without serious bomb threats or attacks,[4] Union PacificRailroad announced plans on September 12, 2006[5]to demolish all remaining building stock around downtown Albany effective January 1st 2007,[6][7][8]) resulting in community outcry (−9).[9][10] However demolition never took place due largely to financing considerations (see below)). During World War II many jobs were created at Navy Yard Boulevard (), adjacent Naval Air Station Patuxent River ()[11], adjacent Riverside Army Air Field ()[12], and adjacent Camp Pendleton (); furthermore thousands more people lived near military facilities than usual due especially to troops stationed thereduringWWII (+13%). Many homes now remain vacant because they were purchased before redevelopment efforts occurred (−14).[15],[16]). Although Don Siegel originally planned only one high school across from Kingsbury Hall Science Center ([17]), he eventually agreed develop two schools side by side across from Interstate 5:[18]). One high school closed down due primarily Toilet Bowl Stadium security concerns about potential student Athletes using restroom areas unsupervised (−19]; however another high school opened shortly thereafter with honors −20). Most recently[21]: Kingsbury Hall Science Center has been renovated into a mixed use campus housing various businesses such as residences [22], professional offices [23], libraries [] (including technology services offered through Hewlett Packard Enterprise),and game engines testing facilities [] (containing research rooms used for physics simulations used aboard US Navy vessels []; additionally[] students have access transportation direly needed for courses such as biology) .

The first post office was established in Albany on October 16th 1850 by Major James Aiken with Pemberton as its first postmaster general. In 1861 General Order No 1 ordered all frontier posts closed because war had started with Mexico. After Sacramento became state capital in 1851, Albany became one of five sites (along with Fresno, Stockton, Visalia and Tuolumne) selected for the new capitol building which opened in May 1852. When Sacramento moved to their new location east off I Street after years living on Constitution Avenue near Lake Merritt it was necessary for Albany to move too since they were occupying space that would have been available had they stayed put. However most people still think that their old brick building south side Union Square used to be called "The Capitol Annex" until it burned down in 1955 behind City Hall (now part of UC Berkeley). Today there are many businesses headquartered here such as Kaiser Permanente/ Carestream HealthCare; PG&E energy company; Apple Inc.; AT&T Wireless; Wells Fargo bank; FirstEnergy Corporation; Verizon Communications Co., etc... One interesting fact about these businesses is that many were founded or were purchased by men who went on to become governors or members of congress such as former HP CEO Carly Fiorina (R-Calif.), current Intel Corp Chairman Andy Grove (R-Minn.), Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen (R- Wash.) and current Comcast CEO Brian Roberts (R-Conn.). In terms of real estate development there has also been some significant growth including several upscale hotels including Marriott Marquis Hotel & Tower [now Marriott Westfield], Regency Ballroom [former Hyatt Regency] &Embassy Suites [former InterContinental], Starwood Preferred Guest Residence Club - Albany[Former Marriott Grand Central], The Plaza Hotel[formerly Hilton Garden Inn] & Palace Ballroom[formerly Omnihotel]. It should also be noted that while much has changed over time regarding job employment opportunities within this city it remains one of Southern California's most economically active areas when measured by median household income levels even ranking higher than Riverside County which has more affluent neighborhoodsNext
