Albany, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 26,527 at the 2010 census. Albany has been the site of many important events in its history- most famously being the location of the battle between American and Mexican forces during the Californio War (1847-48). It also serves as a key transportation hub for the region. The first European to visit what is now Albany was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 14, 1542. He named it San Francisco de las Nieves after his flagship vessel HMS "San Francisco" which he had sunk off Guadalupe Island because of problems with its navigation system. In 1851, gold was discovered near Albany by Hiram Sutter and John Cushing and this led to intense speculation in the area. In 1853, Sacramento became the new capital of California when Mexico ceded control of Northern California to America under Treaty #8Phoenix Lodge No 1 (February 9th), 1853. In January 1861, Albany was incorporated as a city with a population of 12 families; however it only had an estimated 2200 residents by 1860 due to lack of infrastructure and other factors such as drought that affected much of southern California then. The Battle of Bear Flag Pass occurred on July 20th 1846 when thousands participated in what would become known as one of history's largest land conflicts between Americans and Mexicans known as The Californio War fought over control over what is now central Nevada and western Arizona Territory including parts currently within Alameda County.
