Albany, California is a city in Northern California and the seat of Alameda County. The population was 56,653 at the 2010 census. In 1868, it became part of the City of Oakland with a population of 41,500. It was then annexed by Berkeley in 1884. In Diablo Valley possession from Yosemite National Park led to development around Albany's Mohawk River waterfront community which became known as "The West Side." In 1907, an ammunition plant was built on San Pablo Avenue near what is now University Avenue in Albany for Remington Arms Company. This company produced all types of ammunition until 1968 when Winchester Ammunition merged with Remington Corporation to form Browning Arms and Ammunition Corporation (BAAC). The Albany plant continued operations until closure in 1978. During its years of operation, BAAC manufactured over 1 million rounds of ammunition including both military and sporting ammo. Today there are remnants of the old Albany plant still standing along San Pablo Ave., just north of University Ave., across from where Stoneman Douglas High School used to stand before being razed in 1984 as part of campus redevelopment plans. These remnant buildings were gutted and rebuilt into a new school complex called North Campus during the early 2000s
