Albany, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Contra Costa County by population and the second-largest city in Northern California after San Francisco. The name comes from the Spanish word "albaida," meaning 'wild flower.' The first humans to live in what is now Albany were Native American traders and travelers who passed through the area on their way to connect with missions farther south. In 1847, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Albany and soon started trading with nearby towns for goods brought overland from China. Gold mining began around 1850, and by 1860 there were enough people living in Albany to warrant a incorporation as a town under the new name of Alameda. In 1868, part of Albany was destroyed during an earthquake that struck Central Valley; this left its core rural but growing until it reached its current size by 1870 when some engineers built a new downtown including what are now three universities—UCLA, UC Berkeley and UCSB—in what is now South Berkeley. After almost 50 years as an agricultural center dating back to when horses were used for transportation rather than working land (the only other large center of agriculture in that time), Albany became an urban community following World War II as more people moved into eastern Contra Costa County looking for jobs in expanding industries such as aeronautics and munitions manufacturing during wartime production plants like Kaiser Aluminum Works and North American Aviation Corporation's Beechcraft Aircraft factory on El Sobrante Boulevard east of downtown. After decades of growthh spurt due mainly to suburban migration within Contra Costa County overspending on infrastructure projects that not only failed but also led to high levels of pollution which continue today despite many attempts at clean up—particularly along Interstate 680 between Richmond and Oakland—Albany’s mayor declared a state of emergency on July 1st 2019 due to widespread social unrest stemming from proposed spending cuts announced just days earlier by then-Governor Gavin Newsom which would have eliminated key funding sources for local services like libraries, parks and firefighting; this lead directly to several nights of protests throughout much of Northern California culminating on November 5th with thousands marching through downtown Sacramento demanding meaningful change while occupying City Hall until finally being forcibly removed by police using pepper spray after refusing orders not to disperse
