In 1892, Alameda County was one of the first in California to adopt a government-owned rifle scope and rifle range. The county land consisted of 2,040 acres at what is now the intersection of Pine and Clay Streets in downtown Alameda. Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 113,402 at the 2010 census. Alameda has been named one of the most livable cities in America by Forbes magazine and was recently voted as the safest city in America by The Daily Beast. The first European to visit what is now Alameda was Francisco Pizarro on October 25, 1546. However, the name "Alameda" only appeared on a map in 1824 when it was merged with Contra Costa County from San Mateo County. At that time there were three villages within Alameda: Livermore, Pleasanton and Oakland (now Oakland). On July 8, 1853, two years after Gold Rush fever had killed more than 2240 people in California's Central Valley and sacked many towns along the way including Concord and Petaluma; Supervisor John Brougham filed an article of incorporation for the town of Alameda with fellow supervisors George Hearst and Elijah Beale as incorporators. The new town included lands north of present-day Broadway which would become significant later on as Hayward and Fremont Streets ran through it. The first post office opened in what is now Downtown Alameda on December 12, 1854 under the name of Livermore Post Office. In 1868 an act was passed entitled "An Act to provide for organizing certain Rancho Seco properties lying between Livermore Bay and Coyote Creek", these included part of what is now East Bayfront Park across from Jack London Square downtown; this area became known as Rancho Seco according to then-District 1 Controller Raymond Wright who described it at that time as follows: "Rancho Seco extended down upon San Pablo Bayou...to Coyote Creek where it terminated near Mission Street". In 1876 Supervisor George Hearst organized a neighborhood called Pacific Heights which bordered North Oakland eastward including much of today's University Heights neighborhoods east of Interstate 580/I-880 (the BART lines run through its eastern edge) while also increasing development westward into Albany View into today's South Hayward neighborhood just south of Lake Merritt Blvd., making Alameda one of the earliest places within modern day Oakland jurisdiction to see large scale suburbanization. As a result much earlyresidential history still remains extant within those areas such as Telegraph Hill although most recently developed blocks have replaced older homes throughout much portions thereof
The first permanent English settlers in Alameda were the Puritans who arrived in 1776. The town was originally called Pleasant Plains, but it was renamed after British general Sir John AlexanderCalifornian in 1847. One of the most famous residents of Alameda is Jack London, author of The Call of the Wild and White Fang.
