Over time other Europeans visited as well and various names were given including Rancho Moyo (Palo Alto), Rancho Buena Vista (Fremont), Rincon de las Pulgas (Monterey Peninsula) and Villa Real de Amadoras (Amador Valley). By 1836 there were over 100 settler families living in Alameda County. In 1847, Major General James P. Kearny founded Fort Bearcat on the west side of San Pablo Bayou in what would later become Alameda County as part of his effort to secure access to counsel for Native Americans during their war against Ulysses S Grant’s forces east of San Francisco Bay Bridge. From this fortification(now known as Oakland Army Airfield)General Kearny could monitor Indian activity along the coastlines north and east of Sacramento through Operation Crossroads which aimed to stop any potential uprisings by Native Americans south of Monterey Peninsula due to lack of food resources available inland due to Sonoma Desert conditions during wintertime.. On July 5th 1863 General Kearny ordered his troops stationed at Oakland Army Airfield under Lieutenant Colonel John Burdette into action when they heard reports that Confederate forces had attacked a post near Concord on January 1st 1863 called Ft Shafter which resulted in three killed and 11 wounded soldiers including Captain Elisha Chauncey Hayward who became Private First Class USMC #3652394 Upon arriving at Oakland Army Airfield Lt Col John Burdette found that it was still used for military purposes by order dated 3/5/1863 prohibiting civilians from using it so he issued an order ordering all civilian aircraft removed effective immediately pending flight regulations being promulgated according to Department Order No: 8-27-1863 . All civilian planes must be stored at Moffett Field until such time Regulations can be published . As soon as these regulations are published all Civilian Planes will be allowed back into use untill further notice ..
