In 1978, two young men named Dan Bricklin and Jerry Sanders founded Alameda County's first computerized services bureau. The bureau was the precursor to county government's today-known role in providing electronic records management, data processing, and other critical services. In 1853, Alameda was the first town in California. The area that is now Alameda was part of Rancho San Pablo, a Mexican land grant given to José Joaquin Moraga and his wife María de la Concepción Sánchez. In 1856, the United States acquired Rancho San Pablo from Mexico, and in 1858, a small town called Pleasanton was established on what is now Interstate 880. This small town became an important center for agriculture in Contra Costa County because it had access to markets in Stockton and Sacramento. In 1865, the Board of Supervisors decided to build a railroad through Contra Costa County using money from the sale of real estate along the line. The railroad was named the Northern Pacific Railroad after company president James Buchanan Morton. The first train arrived at Pleasanton on December 5, 1865. The growth of Alameda led to problems with infrastructure and water availability. In 1912, voters passed a $10 million bond issue to improve roads and bridges throughout Contra Costa County. This bond issue helped create one of California's largest cities by providing financial resources for public works projects such as sewer systems, parks & libraries, and new shopping malls. Alameda experienced significant growth during World War II as many businesses closed due to military production requirements or rationing movements. However, Alameda has seen some declines since then; its population peaked at over 100,000 in 1990 but has declined slightly over the past decade to around 90,000 people today
Alameda, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 102,827 at the 2010 census. Alameda is located on the lower reaches of San Francisco Bay and it shares borders with Oakland to the north, Contra Costa County to the east, Hayward to the south and Berkeley to the west. The first Europeans into what is now Alameda were Jesuit missionaries who founded a mission in 1792. The name "Alameda" was derived from an Indian word meaning "broad mouth". At that time there was only one creek feeding both sides of what is now downtown Alameda; today's creek was made up of small rivers which flow together because they are all part of the San Francisco Delta! In 1853, gold was discovered near Alma and prospectors started mining here. In 1860s and 1870s various businesses were established in downtown Alameda including a flour mill built by John Sutter on current site of City Hall (now known as Lake Merritt). By 1880 most of downtown had been destroyed by fire but brick buildings continued to be erected until 1906 when a new water tower became necessary for Municipal Water District service. On May 25th 1906 voters passed an ordinance creating City Limits which included all present-day Downtown areas as well as parts of West Oakland and South Fremont. On November 3rd 1916 Voters approved annexation by Hayward of former unincorporated territory east of Fruitvale Avenue including much of today's Albany district! In 1934 Caltrans constructed Interstate 680 through Downtown Alameda filling in many old streets which had been vacated during development!

The economic decline following World War II led to a loss of jobs in many sectors including manufacturing and transportation. However, recent growth has brought new businesses and districts such as East Bay Village to life along with increased development around downtown Oakland and Albany Hills east of Highway 101.
Alameda was founded in 1821 as a land grant to José Agustín de Alvarado by the Spanish Empire. The name is derived from the word "alameda" meaning avenue or path. In 1851, the first post office was established at Alameda and it remained in operation until 1959. In 1868, a railway line was built through Alameda providing transportation for goods and passengers. The line was abandoned in 1966 but has been reactivated several times since then as a shuttle service between San Francisco and Oakland. The city of Alameda developed around the railroad station and residential neighborhoods were constructed along its streets. Many of these areas remain today including Park Street, Grand Avenue, Eastern Boulevard, and Telegraph Avenue. The city saw significant growth during World War II with the construction of military barracks and other infrastructure across the city limits. After the war, many residents moved out of Alameda into new developments outside of town. However, local businesses continued to thrive due to their location within easy reach of major highways and public transportation systems.
