A committee was formed to select a suitable location for the first target range in Alameda and they chose the old government arsenal on Telegraph Avenue near Lake Merritt. The Arsenal quickly became known as “the Mecca of Target Shooting” and many other towns in Northern California followed suit. Numerous championships were held at the Arsenal over the years and it is still one of the most popular targets shoots in Northern California today. Alameda, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 137,815 at the 2010 census. It is the eighth-most populous city in the Bay Area of San Francisco and the most populous municipality in Northern California. The name Alameda comes from Spanish: Alegre meaning "happy" and dalmacio meaning " rancho." The first recorded use of this location as an English name was in 1808 when John day camped on the current site of Alameda Bridge. American traders named it Pleasanton because of its pleasant weather conditions. In 1851, Colonel George Armstrong Custer's 8th Cavalry found gold near what is now downtown Alameda and raised money for his army by selling goods at cost to settlers on both sides of the river. In 1868, part of Rancho Rincon de la Mancha became part of Oakland Township when that township was created from portions of Contra Costa and San Pablo Counties. In 1870, part of Donner National Forest became included in Oakland Township too. By 1900, all civil government functions were transferred from Contra Costa County to Oakland Township including streetlights, sewers and water systems. At that time there were just 15 people living in Raidersville; however by 1910 it hadgrown to over 100 with a schoolhouse and 2 sawmills (one stillOperates). By 1920 there were 535 residents living on block bounded by Center Street, High Street/Pleasanton Road (/Old Highway 1), Telegraph Road (now Mandela Parkway)and Broadway (now Santa Fe Drive). On May 14th 1906 a fire destroyed most parts offeres along Center Street between High Street/Pleasanton Road (/Old Highway 1)and Broadway (now Santa Fe Drive). This event has been called one of the biggest fires ever fought in Marin County! With such intense heat burns black soot could be seen above ground for many blocks around town; however few buildings or homes were lost due to this fire

Manufacturing has shrunk significantly in recent decades while agricultural production remains an important part of the local economy. According to Forbes magazine's 2018 list of America's 100 wealthiest cities, Alameda ranks second among U.S. counties for median household income (after Santa Clara). In 1855, San Francisco had become established as the new capital of California following its purchase by General Ignacio Simón Carrillo from Mexico City; however, because San Francisco was not under Mexican jurisdiction and did not have an official land title system like Contra Costa County did, there remained uncertainty about who would shouldered responsibility for maintaining law and order during this period known as the alcalde era (presidential term). An effort to solve this problem resulted in three brothers from Albany doing business as Merchants Bankers & Trust Companys - George A., John A., and Jacob Schiff - creating the first bank branch in Oakland on December 12th of that year with $5 worth of notes issued against real estate held by them on that date.[1] This event helped solidify their position as leaders within early Oakland characterized locally as having "a high-business vote".[2] On October 15th 1870, when California became a general United States territory following Mexican independence at Baja California;[3][4][5] due to this change in government structure local leaders elected Jens Christensen president pro tempore of Contra Costa County Board Of Supervisors which then voted him into office effective November 1st 1870; making him one of only two elected officials within any US territorial jurisdiction at that time,[6][7][8][9][10] both Californians being citizens or residents thereof at that time.[11][12][13] From its inception until 1850s most political power within Contra Costa County resided with individual supervisors appointed by Governor Charles Evans Hughes who controlled muchOf Central Valley Republican Party machinery through his control over key Assembly districts including those bounded around Richmond/San Pablo Bay Area

The area now Includes Alameda and Contra Costa counties, and is located about 12 miles east of San Francisco. The early years were a time of growth for Alameda. In 1868, the city was founded as a result of the merger of two small towns - Pleasanton and Oakland - that had been separate since 1849. In 1906, Alameda became one of the original 94 municipalities in California when it was split from Contra Costa County. Since then, Alameda has undergone many changes, most notably during the riots that took place in 1991 following Operation Just Cause which led to the US military occupation of Panama. In recent years, Alameda has seen heavy investment in its economy with new businesses popping up all over town. This growth has put strain on resources such as water and transportation, but it is still making progress towards becoming a more sustainable community.
