Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 117,815 at the 2010 census. Its namesake is Alameda Point on Alameda Island in San Francisco Bay. It has been the county seat of Contra Costa County since 1853 and it is located on the East Coast of San Francisco Bay near the interchange of Interstate 80 and State Route 84. The first Europeans to visit what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish traders and explorers in 1769–1770 who named the area Punta Arenas because they saw an island with two hills rising out of the water. The island was probably not where Alameda Point now stands but someplace nearby that was chosen for its strategic position between Mission Bay and Golden Gate Park. Captain George Vancouver explored land west of missions Viejo de Cristo in 1792, naming it Vancouver's Land beyond Mexico (now Marin County). In 1824, James K Long identified an isolated piece of shoreline which he called "Alameda" after General José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla, who had fought with Santa Anna at Buena Vista during Mexican Independence War. In 1853, as part of efforts to create a new county seat for Contra Costa County, voters approved a resolution to move from Dublin to Alameda. On January 24, 1854, the law creating Contra Costa County went into effect and Alameda became its first county seat. The original courthouse building still stands today on Third Street between Oakley and Fremont Streets in downtown Alameda; it served as both courtrooms for the newly created county government as well as until 1922 when a new courthouse was built on Market Street adjacent to Hayward University Hospital which remains today one of downtown's most visible landmarks. In 1898 Measure V passed by Los Angeles residents voting over 60% against allows cities such as Oakland (10%)and Berkeley (14%)to annex portions of unincorporated areas including parts of Contra Costa County east of Interstate 280 within three years provided those areas had failed to establish themselves economically or politically within five years after annexation—a provision later repealed by state lawmakers under pressure fromOakland Mayor Libby Schaaf following her unsuccessful campaign for governor in 2014 The largest concentration or growth around this time happened along Interstate880 where many businesses moved from Orinda due to restrictive zoning laws enacted during that period including measures limiting development along I-880 itself . across town housing developments sprung up rapidly resulting in major pollution issues throughout much of eastern Contra Costa Co
