Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 87,821 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th largest city in California and the 13th largest city in Northern California. The City of Alameda was established on November 3, 1853 by act of the 7th Legislature of California as part of a district including San Francisco and Oakland. The name honors General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had helped to overthrow Spanish rule in Mexico and become an American independence fighter. The first gun magazine in Alameda was called "The Arsenal" which opened its doors on December 1st 1854. In 1856 it became known as "The Rifleman". On February 14th 1861 it changed its name to "The Examiner". In 1865 it merged with other magazines into what would become the Alameda Rifle Club which continued publication until 1895 when it merged with another rifle club to form the current Alameda Rifle Association (ARA). On July 2nd 1898 two gunmen stormed into The Armory shooting and wounding several people before escaping with their firearms. In 1873, Alameda became part of the newly formed City of San Francisco through an act of state legislature. The first post office opened in 1887, and remained open until 1942. The original town site included what is now downtown Alameda and all but one block of present-day MidtownSan Francisco. The remaining block, which is now parkland near Fremont Street, had been annexed by Oakland in 1872 and then annexed by San Francisco in 1876; it was part of Midtown until it was re-annexed as part of Alameda in 1888. The city's early years were a time when horses were used to pull wagons between Peralta Creek and what is now Hearst Avenue;[1] henceforth self-driving cars would use that route less frequently because there was no reliable means to transport goods over long distances then. On February 14th 1865,[2] Californian rower John Sutter (1811-1865) set foot on Utopia Island just off shore from today's Hayward Point neighborhood after crossing the Golden Gate Bridge on horseback during an attempt to find new land for settlement northward beyond Monterey Bay.[3][4] After his journey across America he reported back to Governor Carmona that he found enough good land east Contra Costa County for 250 families,[5] so Sutter's discovery led directly to founding Silicon Valley where technology companies are headquartered today
Alameda County, California was formed on November 3, 1853, from Contra Costa and Marin Counties. The county's name comes from Alamo Hill, a site near San Francisco. The first site of the present-day county was at the foot of Alamo Hill. A land grant of 8000 acres (3 km2) was given to James P. Hogan in 1838 by Governor Manuel Miranda as part of Rancho Nobre grant which also included parts of today's Berkeley and Oakland neighborhoods.
