A community developed near today's intersection of Interstate 880 and Grand Avenue/Pleasanton Boulevard (formerly University Avenue) south of downtown Oakland due to easy access to jobs in nearby Milpitas and Concordia Universities; this was called Pleasanton Township until 1862 when it was annexed by Oakland intoistership under United States jurisdiction as part of a land grant given to John Dolan by Ulysses S. Grant during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. On July 25, 1871 local resident James Hogg organized a fire that destroyed entire blocks near what is now Lake Merritt before starting to dry out oakum left over from shipbuilding days on Haight Street opposite Pioneer Hall public square across from Millsaps College campus; this event is generally regarded as marking the beginning of modernOakland which included parts now within Alameda county including Richmond Heights and Emeryville communities some sixteen miles north shoreline along Broadway near Jack London Square before reaching present day Eureka Park four miles northeast at Embarcadero Marina

The first post office opened at Alameda on December 5th, 1854; it was renamed Pleasanton on May 24th of the same year due to objections from residents who felt that the new appellation would bring dishonor to their community's history dating back to 1853. A second post office operated at Oakland until January 1865 becauseamps could not reach eastern Contra Costa County then traversed viaraitngs across Hunt Valley (now Hillsborough) into Oakland proper before terminating at Antioch Road just east ofpresent day Fremont Street/Pleasanton Avenue junction). Two years later an express wagon road (the Stockton & North Bay Railroad) crossed through downtown from Concord & Sacramento rivers providing easy access between these villages and downtownSan Jose
