The first Europeans to set foot on the current site of Alameda were Spanish explorers in 1542. The area was part of the missions system and was sparsely populated until the early 1800s, when a series of land grants from Spain led to a rapid population growth. By 1836, Alameda had become an independent city. In 1868, the California Statehood Convention decided that Alameda would be the capital of California. The city grew rapidly thereafter and by 1900 had reached its present size. In 1906, Alameda became a U.S. city and has continued to grow steadily ever since. Alameda is home to several important institutions, including University of California (UC) Berkeley and Pacifica Radio station KPFA-FM (106.7 FM). It is also served by Amtrak's "Amtrak West Coast Line" service which connects it with San Francisco and various other cities on the East Coast.
