Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 66,463 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the banks of the San Francisco Bay and is part of the Silicon Valley region. It is one of Santa Clara County's five cities. The first Europeans to visit Alameda were Juan Bautista de Anza and his group of Spanish priests who landed on shore at present-day Hayward in 1821. He named it after lieutenant governor Manuel Acosta y Valdez, who had accompanied him on his exploratory survey of California during that year. In 1825, Alameda became part of Mexico when Emperor Agustín de Iturbide ceded California to Spain following its war with American forces under General José Joaquín Córdova. Mexican officials renamed the city "Alameda" in honor of King Fernando VII of Spain (1823–1826). The City Council adopted an ordinance providing for public schools in 1856; however, no school was built until 1870 when a brick building on Western Avenue was opened as Wilmington Elementary School. A new school district was created in 1896 when Contra Costa and Marin Counties merged to form that district; Alameda then became a part of this district. In 1906, the City Council voted to annex Unincorporated areas located east and northwest of downtown for water purposes only; these annexation efforts failed but resulted in increased development along Westshore Drive from 1911 to 1916 which changed the character and appearance of what had been rural farmland into an upscale residential area today known as Downtown Alameda. In 1922, voters passed Measure T which provided for staggered term limits for mayor/council members; consequently, John Waring (1922–2002) served two terms before being elected mayor for a fourth term beginning January 1st, 2003; becoming also the first African American to hold this office within Santa Clara County history On November 5th 2002 there was another special election held by Voters Committee entitled: "Election Of Alderman Third Ward - Christine Johnson". Incumbent Christine Johnson ran against 2nd Ward incumbent Jeff Koppenhaver but lost 50% compared to her opponent’s 48%. This sets off a race between Koppenhaver and 3rd Ward candidate Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini over control over patronage decisions made by Mayor Waring while he was serving as Alderman

Alameda is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 136,405 at the 2010 census. Alameda was one of the original thirteen cities incorporated on November 3, 1853. The city's name comes from an oak tree that once grew in its area and which is still present in downtown Alameda and other parts of the city. The first Europeans to visit what is now Alameda were Spanish explorers sailing under captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 2, 1542, when they sighted land about two miles wide and three leagues long extending to the eastward as far as Mission Bay on San Francisco Bay. They named it Isla de los Fuegos because of theKayenta woodpecker that they found there. In 1824 an act of Congress created Contra Costa County, based on portions of San Mateo and Marin counties which had been annexed by California during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1847 Alameda became part of this new county; but despite its location within Contra Costa County it continued to be a separate municipality with its own government until 1906. In 1916 voters selected to become a part of the City of Berkeley instead of remaining separate; however Berkeley retained its own government until 1971 when it became a charter member of Oakland. The first post office in Alameda opened in 1854; it closed in 1903 because postal service throughout Contra Costa County was then provided by stagecoaches from Stockton rather than trains or buses. In 1904 James Wainwright built John Wainwright's Lighthouse Complex at Point Richmond along Yerba Buena Cove just north of downtown; this lighthouse is now known as Wonder Land Park Preserve headquarters and Visitor Center (address: 20 Broadwalk Avenue). At Point Richmond he also erected a wharf for tidal loading and unloading goods brought into San Francisco Bay by ships docking at Yerba Buena Cove for transportation inland by wagon or coach across Sonoma Creek to Sacramento before being delivered directly to markets in East Bay towns such as Daly City and Hayward before being shipped back out to sea again numerous times between Point Richmond and Sausalito before finally reaching Oakland Harbor via Fulton Street Landing where goods were unloaded onto barges called "Wainwright Wagons" towed upriver past Fort Mason into Livermore Strait before finally arriving at Oakland Harbour where they were offloaded onto vessels headed for various ports around Northern California including Sacramento where they would be sold prior to delivery back out into San Francisco Bay again many times between Point Richmond and Sausalito before finally reaching Oakland Harbour via Fulton Street Landing where goods were unloaded onto barges called "Wainwright Wagons" towed upriver past Fort Mason into Livermore Strait before finally arriving at Oakland Harbour where they were offloaded onto vessels heading for various ports around Northern California including Sacramento where they would be sold prior to delivery back out into San Francisco Bay again many times between 1850-1904
