Agoura Hills, California is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 113,554. The name Agoura Hills comes from Agoura Hills School District #1 which was named for Rancho Cucamonga and its original white settlers. The first post office in Agoura Hills opened in 1887. In 1915 the city was annexed by Los Angeles and became part of that larger municipality. The history ofAgoura Hills goes back to 1848 when Mexican traders and travelers on their way to San Francisco passed through what is now Agoura Hills and made initial contact with Native Americans hereabouts. Rancho Cucamonga had been grant to José Maria Alcalde who later sold it to John Sutter in 1849. On July 1, 1853 an Act of Congress granted all of Ventura County to Juan Bautista Alvarado as Rancho Cucamonga de la Mesa y Osuna. One year later on July 15th ,1854 this land containing present day Agoura Hills was conveyed by act of Congress to Hernando De Soto who named it Rancho Santa Anita de la Calvada del Rancherojon Pacheco because his fellow countryman José Antonio Pacheco (1781-1846) had offered him one million acres (40 km²)of rich ranchland east of Los Angeles proper just south of Ventura Boulevard between Villa Park Road and Philosophical Parkway). Mexican grants increased in size over time with more areas being given including: Rancho Santa Anita de la Calvada del Rancherojon Pacheco; Mission Concepción; Mission San Fernando Rey de América; Soledad Magna; La Paloma Adobe; Torrance Adobe etc., until there were 108 ranches located within Ventura County taking up an area greater than .net square miles (.27 mi²). Spanish colonists arrived soon after under Spanish captain Gabriel Moraga whose mission complex included a small chapel (Stratford Cathedral) on the banks of the Arroyito Creek near modern day Pioneer Drive and founded the town plazuela or "square." A second mission complex known as Nuestra Señora Esperanza Parish Church was founded about 1615AD on property presently north facing Yorba Linda Rd., west side Coyote Canyon Road, east side Slauson Canyon Road & north side Glassell Drive next door to Don Carlos Unser home at 9600 Glendale Blvd today’s sequence Walnut Ave/Hector Chavez Dr.). The Presidio also includes a large armory where cannons were stored during missions plus barracks for soldiers & marines garrisoning Southern California during War II along with other buildings such as jail cells & slaves quarters used for agricultural storage purposes only! It should be noted that these structures have been reconstructed or restored numerous times thru out history making them some might say even more significant then their historical value! By 1850 less than 10 years after Juan Bautista Alvarado acquired Rancho Cucamonga de la Mesa y Osuna he had built several new residences including San Pedro Square now known as Old Town Agoura Heights while still residing at ranch headquarters located at present day Villa Park Rd/Pioneer Dr.? His son Manuel Lomas bought 650 acres adjacent northwest corner Valley View/Old Pasadena Blvd., Isabella Rd./Valley View Cir., northeast corner Antelope/Annie Oakley Drs.(now Willowbrook Village), southeast corner Lennox Ave./Evelyn Place Ct./Harry Truman Way(now Arden Way)), southwest corner Washington Ave./Catherine Court(now Pershing Pl.)& northeast corner First St.(later Churchill Downs),what is now downtown Hollywood? In 1865 Angelina Jolie's father Charles Jarman purchased most if not all eastern edge undeveloped sections near Highland Avenue & Western Avenue from Juan Bautista Alvarado via deed poll for $50 per acre??? Her father then subdivided this land into parcels selling it off one-by-one thru out much of LA COUNTY until finally achieving title thru donation to University Of Southern California dormitories faculty & staff c1966??? By 1880 over 50 lots had been developed totaling +/- 4,000 sq ft ???
