Agoura Hills is a city in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 44,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is adjacent to Beverly Hills and Bel-Air. The city's rich history can be traced back to 1879, when it was founded as Agoura Heights by Rancho Cucamonga settlers. In 1889, Agoura Hills became an incorporated municipality with a population of 30 residents. In 1916, it annexed neighbouring Brentwood and formed a new city with a population of 100,000 people. In 1959, Agoura Hills became one of two cities in southern California (the other being Hawthorne) that were merged into the City of LA; this merger left Brentwood as an enclave within LA with its own government and school board. The knife industry has played an important role in the history of Agoura Hills since its inception as a settlement – early knifemakers included ranch hands and their families who grew crops and hunted game for subsistence purposes. By 1888, there were five knife shops operating in Agoura Heights – four run by farmers and one by local craftsman John Harbison who made hoes and axes fromruce wood working tools he scavenged from defunct lumber mills around town. The first European to settle in what is now Agoura Hills was José Joaquin Crespo on November 6, 1776. He and his family were Spanish-Americans who came from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. From there they moved to northern Ventura County where they engaged in ranching and farming until 1848 when they sold their land to J. P. Morgan for $5 million dollars. In 1907 a group of developers named "The Firm" began efforts to ensure that development would take place in Agoura Hills along Sawtelle Boulevard east of present day Mulholland Drive. The firm developed over 2,000 acres (10 km²) of undeveloped land between Sawtelle Boulevard and Mulholland Drive into single-family homes, high school and hospital campuses, shopping malls and other commercial areas that remain some of the most successful in Southern California today. During World War II many Agoura Hills residents joined the United States Armed Forces because it was thought that their proximity to LA would provide them with an equal opportunity for employment opportunities even though they were not citizens or legal residents of the United States yet

The city straddles the eastern edge of Agoura Hills Rancho San Bernardino and western edge of agouraville rancho. The first settlement in what would become Agoura Hills was made by Mexicans working on a cattle farm in 1847. In 1853, three brothers founded the Pacific Mail Railway through Agoura Hills and other parts of Northern California to promote mail service between Sacramento and points east. This led to the founding of many small towns around the railway's route including Acton, Arroyo Seco, Brentwood, Canoga Park and Sun Valley during this time period. In 1880, an agreement was made between two ranchers in Agoura Hills – José Castro and Manuel Nieto – under which both men agreed to sell their land for development into single-family homes that could be bought or leased by individuals or companies interested in constructing businesses within their boundaries. These early developers were responsible for laying out much of today's downtown Agoura Hills as well as developing several blocks north of North First Street near Claremont Road (now Ventura Boulevard). The arrival of automobiles led to a rapid growth rate for suburban living in Northern California during the 1920s and 1930s; this included an increase in heavy industry along with new subdivisions developed close to rail lines leading into Southern California such as Topanga Canyon and Simi Valley. By 1935, there were over 100 residents living in Downtown Agoura Hills while more than 3,000 people lived within 1 mile (2 km) of any major transportation artery - making it one of America's most thoroughly streetcar-dependent cities at that time.
