His targets were made fromlogs and broad sticks that he found near his shop. In 1915, Agoura Hills Rifle Club was formed and began to use these Targets. The first real Gun Target competition took place on October 12th, 1916 at the home of Capt. John Fenton in Airdrie Road. There were only six shooters from around the area who competed against each other for prizes totaling $50.00. This event is considered to be one of the earliestgun target competitions in California. In 1924, Captain Fenton donated a large piece of land located between Ventura Boulevard and Airdrie Road to the Agoura Hills Rifle Club for use as their Gun Target Practice Field). This Field became one of Southern California’s most popular gun target areas where enthusiasts could come and shoot off more than 100 different rounds at various distances over several days or weeks).
