It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and shares borders with Fremont to the east, Hayward to the south and Richmond to the west. The name comes from Agoura Hill, a small hill located in what is now downtown Agoura Hills. The earliest evidence of habitation in present-day Agoura Hills date back to 8th century BC when Awa Kawa tribe member Huiwau discovered an abandoned village on top of Mount Diablo near modern day Agoura Hills Boulevard and Alma Street. In 1847 an American settler named George Hearst founded Castle Keepers Rancho de la Mesa two miles northwest of Agoura Hills on land that he had bought from José Joaquín Cámpora y Pacheco. The town site was chosen because it had good soil and views for agriculture due to its location at an altitude above sea level and its proximity to water resources such as reservoirs, wells and rivers. By 1860 there were 108 residents living in nine buildings within what would become downtown Agoura Hills. DowntownAgouraHills began growing rapidly during the 1870s when several quarries opened up along Alma Street which led to increased traffic around campus for local products like marble and granite while also providing jobs for workers from nearby townships like Hercules or Newark who pulled carts carrying materials up Alma Street into downtownAgarhills where they unloaded onto wagons heading out into Contra Costa County or north into El Sobrante County for lumber production or mining purposes; both areas still have some remnants of their former industrial heyday today including numerous warehouses converted into residential dwellings known as “ agro-towns” throughout Contra Costa County today). Finally by 1906 following passage of state law allowing towns within Contra Costa county To levy taxes on property valuesabove $5 per acre these merchants responded by building new subdivisions called "suburbia" outside downtown away from public view making sure their properties remained undeveloped so that their businesses could still generate taxable income even though most had been replaced by newer commercial developments since then)... This suburban development model eventually led directlyto decline & gentrificationof much older districts& neighborhoods insideagrotowns&suburbs leadingto increasing neighborhood opposition culminatingin 1978with rioting throughout centralCityAnacondas over plans for annexation by neighbouringSan Francisco resultingin 3 dead & dozens injured
Agoura Hills was founded in 1887 by George Agoura and his brother, Charles. The brothers were entrepreneurs who invested in a variety of businesses including grocery stores, furniture warehouses, and a saddlery business. In 1907, the brothers sold their interest in these businesses to their father-in-law, Augustus H. Grant. Grant's company became one of the leading leather companies in California. He also developed a large landscaping empire that included properties around Los Angeles and Ventura County. In 1922, he donated land to Agoura Hills for use as a community center and later renamed it "Agoura Hills". In 1951, Hollywood star James Dean settled in Agoura Hills after moving from nearby Brentwood. Dean helped promote the town as a popular tourist destination and played several roles in its development over the years. In 1969, he donated $1 million to the town for local schools.
