In 1857, a post office was established at what is now Agoura Hills with José de la Cruz as the first postmaster. A grammar school and church were built in the early 1860s on what is today Hearst Drive. In 1865, Major General Ulysses S. Grant stood on a hill overlooking what is now Agoura Hills to give an Address to American Soldiers at Fort Donelson in Tennessee
