The first people to live in this area were the Chumash people who inhabited the slopes that now make up Agoura Hills. They hunted and gathered plants and animals along with building their own shelters out of small hillsocks. By 1800, other groups had moved into what is now Agoura Hills including Mission Indians, Mexicans, Anglos and Japanese Americans who founded schools, churches and businesses. In 1853, when ranching began to be developed in this area by ranchers such as George Crampton, many people started moving to this region because of its fertile land and good water supply for irrigation purposes. In 1885 an express train derailed near Agoura Hills after running over a switch on its way from Pasadena to Malibu; all those on board were killed or severely injured

They named this area Santa Anita because some Indians called it Soquelita (meaning "place where deer are"). In 1819, Captain George Bancroft explored this region and named it after Major General James Ketchum, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). He thought that Ketchum would be interested in finding small ports on the coast so that American traders could buy goods brought overland by Mexican traders. In 1879, Agoura Heights was developed as an agricultural town by Colonel Edward Culp Strong with assistance from his brother-in-law Death Valley Meadows developer John Fisk Sr.. That same year also saw the opening of what would become one of Southern California's most popular tourist attractions: Disney's Park Avenue Resort across Harbord Street from Interstate 5 near Magic Kingdom Park Lake House & Moreland Place Hotel .
