It is part of the San Gabriel Valley and it isadjacent to the city of West Covina. The first settlement in what became Agoura Hills was made by Mexicans who had camped along the Pacific Coast during 1847-48 as part of their journey from Mexico City to Sonoma County. In 1849, General Mariano Cárdenas ordered Mexican troops dismounted and march 12 miles (19 km) throughorseback across open desert to establish a new military post called Rancho Santa Clara de Agoura Hills on present day Winchester Road between La Brea Avenue and Sylmar Avenue. The rancho was purchased by James Fenton in 1851 and his son John Fenton sold it to David Teague in 1861 for $10,000 plus costs of construction. The town began forming when strains developed within the agricultural community over land prices (relative to production costs), labor rates, water access, etc., which led some residents to move away while others decided to make their home within easy commuting distance of other centers such as Los Angeles or Pasadena. The village name may be derived from Irish agus (place). In 1870 developer George Eastman established what would become an important citrus industry center with his Orchard Farms operation nearpresent day Northridge Boulevard and Arroyo Seco Creek; this area later became known as West Covina. With its central location within easy commuting distance of major cities such as Los Angeles or Pasadena, Agoura Hills quickly emerged as one of Southern California's most prominent communities. Downtown development picked up pace after World War II with social services being provided by agencies like Catholic Charities until more recent decades have seen redevelopment activities centered around office parks and housing developments adjacent to Interstate 5 freeways that provide ample access both inside and outside of the city limits
Agoura Hills was founded by George H. Smith in 1887 as a small agricultural community of about 100 residents. The town grew rapidly, and by 1913 had a population of 3,500. It became an incorporated city in 1963.
