A different group of Native Americans occupied this area about 1800 CE when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed at Point Conception on September 6th 1542 CE His landfall near where Fort Tejon now stands led him to name this place Isla Vista after himself “Isla de las Flores” meaning “Island of the Flowers” This is also where he first tasted wine which he named Malibu because it grew on Mission San Gabriel Arcangeli located just east side Rancho Santa Margarita grant granted by Governor Pico de Ayala on November 7th 1776 CE Although Spanish explorers did visit this area many times over several centuries various names have been given including Rancho de la Paloma or Rancho del Monte because it was adjacent to missions like Mission San Gabriel Arcangeli while other areas were leased or sold including eventually becoming part of Interstate 5
