The Adelanto scopes company was founded in 1907 by John T. Ruedy, who designed and built the first American telescope, the Adelanto. The company continued to produce telescopes until the early 1950s. In 1932, general manager Elmer F. Weisman organized a competition to find a new design for an American Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope that would be able to compete with European models. The resulting design, which became known as the "Weisman Scope", won a $5,000 prize from Swarovski America Incorporated. In 1953, Adelanto purchased Schmidt-Cassegrain production rights from Swarovski America Incorporated and continued production of the scope under its own name until 1957. From then on, production was handled by Wernher von Braun's Space Technology Corporation (STOC). In 1961, STOC merged with Ball Aerospace & Electronics Corp., forming Ball Aerospace & Electronics Corporation (BAEC). During World War II, Adelanto developed radar technology and produced generators for use in anti-aircraft artillery platforms. After the war ended in 1945, ADE resumed development of radar technology and equipment used in air defense systems; this led to their creation of one of the world's first airborne warning system radars called "Adela". This instrument operated from an airplane and tracked targets over terrain up to 100 miles away using ellipses antennae; it could not be seen by human eyes but could be detected by ground-based receivers carrying antennas that aimed at it

Today, only one building from the original depot still remains: the Administration Building which served as both headquarters for Southern Pacific Railroad's Western Division and company store.
