It is located on Route 66, 12 miles east of Sacramento and 24 miles west of San Bernardino. Adelanto is known for its many citrus orchards and vineyards. The first Europeans to visit the area were two Spanish traders, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and Partida, on August 14, 1769. They named the area Santa Anita after Saint Anne of Padua. A post office was established at Adelanto on November 10, 1852. The town became a city on December 1st of that year. The people who founded Adelanto may have been drawn to its natural resources: there are many citrus orchards in the town today dating back to the 1800s when it was part of Rancho Rinconcito de la Vieja Missions District administered by Franciscan missionaries from San Francisco Bay Area. The early residents quarryed granite for mortar and tiles and mined copper and silver in what is now parts of central butte County; also some early settlers built homes made out of logs which still stand around downtown Adelanto today (the oldest being Built 1853). In 1909–10 John Fenton erected a large gas station/grocery store near present day US-66 & Rt 592 called "Fenton's". It was located just south of where FM 592 presently intersects I-5 (now I-580) south of downtown Adelantonio as well as within walking distance fron most residences making it an important location during that time period for commercial purposes as well as access to local highways across town including US 66/Rt 592 looping back north through town then east again into Butte County before terminating just northeast of Main Street intersection with Depot Road). In 1951 Fenton sold his business to Henson's Foods Inc.; following incorporation by special act (SB 827) Henson's merged with Kingman Grocery Co., Incorporated (KGCO), parent company grocery store chain controlled by Jell-O Corporation in 1957 becoming one giant Jell-O Corp./Henson's family enterprise extending beyond groceries into other retail businesses such as service stations/hotels until divestiture by Jell-O Corporation in 1979 leading to establishment of Riverbend Supermarkets Chain throughout Western USA leaving only KGCO operations remaining throughout California Business Line: -Henson's Companies plc.-Kingman Grocery Co., Inc.-Jell-O Corp./Henson's Family Enterprise
