Adelanto, California is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 137,754 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Greater Los Angeles and is one of the largest cities in Southern California. The name Adelanto comes from an Anglo-Australian miner who prospected for gold near present day Adelanto Creek in 1848. In 1851, Captain John Sutter’s party discovered and named what would become Adelanto Creek after General James Hahn (1785-1857), Commander of United States forces at Monterey Peninsula during Mexican War I. The town began as a small ranching community on Coyote Hills Road 12 miles east of downtown L.A., with settlers including J.C. Penney (1862-1942) and his brother Charley Payne (1864-1945). A post office called Coyote Hills was established at what is now the eastern edge of today’s downtown by mail carrier Prentice Mosely on October 14, 1902; it closed February 15, 1916 because of earthquake damage to nearby buildings. At first, many people did not believe that earthquakes were caused by natural causes; instead they attributed it all to “the great fire that swept through town on Wednesday night [December 12], 1906." In 1912 when Pasadena became an independent city and its own post office opened within hours due to destruction caused by a gas leak from Occidental Petroleum Company's new refinery just east of town, much attention turned to Coyote Hills as Pasadena's main commercial center but no new development occurred until 1915 when Guggenheim Securities moved into their original building at 6th Street and Prospect Avenue adjacent to Hollywood Bowl which had been their previous location west of Seventh Street between Park Boulevard and Lankershim Boulevard. This event signaled the beginning of residential growth in what would later become known as Downtown El Monte with businesses moving out into Morena Heights or south along Van Nuys Boulevard into Glendale Heights early before parkland was developed further north across Third Street into El Monte Heights (now part of Monterrey). During World War II many residents served in military camps located throughout Southern California including those stationed around Laguna Beach such as Camp Roberts on Taylor Drive northeast corner Highway 101/Merrill Drive south side off Route 205 between Mission Viejo Road & Ventura Boulevard along Elliot Ranch Road east side off Interstate 805 only about 4 miles north from present day Northridge
