The first permanent European settlement in present-day Adelanto was made by José Francisco de Alvarado on December 12, 1823 when he and his men arrived from Mexico City with supplies for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican War effort. The town was founded on Rancho Rinconada (now part of Home Park) about two miles northeast of what is now downtown Adelanto. In 1852, James Fenton purchased Rancho Rinconada and began to build a sawmill there which became one of the largest in California. In 1870, Fenton sold Rinconada to George Hearn and his brother Stanley Forster Hearn. They renamed it Hearn Mines because they were mineral owners in that area). From 1872 until 1915, Adelanto served as a station on Southern Pacific Railway's Central Pacific Railroad line between Sacramento and Los Angeles; during this time it also served as headquarters for numerous railroad companies including the Western Electric Company and Northern Pacific Railroad. During World War I, Adelanto played an important role as a munitions production center for both belligerents due to its strategic location near Bakersfield and Arroyo Seco reservoirs used for water storage. After hostilities ended in 1918, many industry plants closed down or were mothballed due to US economic sanctions against Russia after World War I. However, some remained such as Lockheed Martin who later moved their main plant from Burbank to Adelanto after being acquired by Lockheed Martin Corporation in 1957. Other major employers during this time included Bell Helicopter company which built their first helicopter here before moving them to Palmdale; Alcoa which built several aluminum smelters; Monsanto had their chemical testing laboratory here while other businesses such as KPMG engaged in accounting services; Safeway opened up shop here while Cerro Grande Brewing Company produced Alameda beers (the first commercially available beer made in America). A new freeway called State Route 99 was completed bypassing Adelanto east of town between 1970 and 1975 connecting it with central Fresno County through Needles along SR 109/SR 101 north of Needles and into Visalia County through Redding along SR 183 south of Redding past Lake Havasu City into Arizona Territory before entering Californian territory again at Yuba Junction inside Yosemite National Park near Sierra Nevada mountain peak Girdwoodhorn just east of Del Norte Gap within Yosemite National Park boundaries During much of these years Amtrak ran passenger trains through town but since 2003 Amtrak has run freight trains only from nearby Stockton via Eureka Rail Terminal
