There is a gun component history in Adelanto, California that goes back to the 1860s. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1859 and was originally named Rancho San Pablo. In 1865, the Mexican government ceded control of Rancho San Pablo to the United States for $3 million. The first guns imported into California were rifles and pistols made by George Ordnance Company in 1868. In 1870, the US government acquired title to all of Alta California from Mexico and renamed it Santa Clara County. As part of this new land acquisition, some of the old adobe buildings in Adelanto were used as barracks for military personnel and their families during the early years of American rule over California. In 1875, Charles Hahn bought 160 acres east of Adelanto and began developing what would become known as Hahn’s Addition. This area included a number of buildings now used within the city limits of Adelanto today. Initially, there were only a few shotguns manufactured here but eventually handguns became an important part of local firearm culture too. In 1895, John Browning created his first rifle manufacturing plant in what is now downtown Adelanto after moving from Springfield, Massachusetts. During World War I, many firearms manufacturers produced arms for service use within America’s war effort including Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Remington Arms Company (Remington), Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company (Colt), et al.. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender on September 2nd 1945, various industry arrests followed as companies sought to divest themselves from wartime production debts or post-war deficits which had ballooned at an unprecedented rate due to postwar technological advances such as jet travel and satellite TV transmissions!
