Adelanto is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 37,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The first post office in Adelanto opened in 1887. The name means "happy village" or "peaceful place." In 1916, the town became an incorporated community and was renamed for Edwin Ladd Adelman (1868-1946), president and general manager of Western Electric Corporation. The initial development of Adelanto took place around what is now Interstate 15 and First Street; these were two dirt roads that ran along present-day agricultural land. A schoolhouse was built on First Street in 1909, followed by a Methodist church in 1911. The first telephone system went into operation in 1920 with the installation of a tower at Second and Baptist Streets. In 1943, when Hollywood's Montero Mountains were bombed during World War II, some residents evacuated to nearby Joshua Tree National Park to avoid potential damage to their homes from the airstrikes. Upon their return, they found their homes had been extensively damaged and many were destroyed; however, most rebuilt within six months thanks to local efforts including fundraising drives and donations from friends and family members. After years of planning by officials including then–Mayor Don Siegel (1948-1975), construction began on what would become known as Highway 54 in 1964 as one of several major freeway projects statewide during Lyndon Johnson's administration; it bypassed downtown Los Angeles entirely and provided much needed economic development southward across Orange County into Riverside County Airport . The original plans called for Highway 54/I-15 interchange to be located just north of town center but due to engineering delays this interchange wasn't built until after highway construction started elsewhere making it difficult for motorists exiting towncenter onto I-15 which effectively cut off access both eastbound/southbound traffic entering towncenter from I-15 while also creating a bottleneck at exit 10A preventing any further growth or progress westward towards Downtown Los Angeles . When Interstate 15 was rerouted through central Indiana following a massive landslide that occurred near Adelanto on Dec 11th 1969 there was much controversy over who should take responsibility for cleaning up mess left behind by Gov Jerry Brown's big government policies back then with agencies like Caltrans doing little more than promise later never happened...so when iway 95 came through about 5 years ago there was no one living here anymore except for some stray dogs that people had left behind because they didn't want them coming into their house so we put them all out on the side lot next to our house

Adelanto was founded on November 3, 1887 by Adolphus C. Cook and his wife, Ida B. Wells. The town was initially named "Atascadero" after Atascadero Lake in San Joaquin County, California. On October 31, 1888 the name of the town changed to "Adelanto" in honor of Adolphus C. Cook's father-in-law, Augustus Atherton Adelantone. The first post office was established in 1892 at the corner of Main and Old Indian Trails Streets. In 1897 the town incorporated as a municipality with a population of about 350 people; however it had no mayor or council members until 1906 when Mayor George W. Armstrong was elected to fill an unexpired term which he had served since 1893; Armstrong served until 1911 when he became Supervisor of Elections for Los Angeles County During World War II (1939-1945) Adelanto produced over 1 million pounds of food that fed WWII troops and their families in Southern California In 1951 Mayor Charles Eisner created the City Council Business Committee to provide more efficient government while increasing transparency On September 14, 1960 the community won its first major victory when they were able to get a city ordinance passed allowing them to start providing safe drinking water without having to apply for permission from county officials
