In 1912, the name was changed to honor Rear Admiral George Armstrong Adair (1863-1937), Commanding Officer of Squadron Five, United States Navy during World War I who had served in Mexico City and Havana before his assignment to command American forces in Southern California. The city's economy relies almost entirely on agriculture; there are over 120 businesses that produce food items such as vegetables, fruits, meat and milk products. A variety of employers include Lockheed Martin Corporation with its headquarters located within walking distance of the city limits, Cal Poly Pomona University (a major university serving both Adelanto and Claremont Hills), Covidien Pharmaceuticals Inc., Northrop Grumman Company and other large companies. Manufacturing jobs have also increased due to new production facilities being built near downtown Adelantonio including two plastics plants operated by Dow Chemical Company and an automotive manufacturing plant operated by Ford Motor Company. These factories have helped contribute 2% to 3% of the city's GDP each year since 2000 while creating thousands of jobs across all sectors. A number of transportation options are available within minutes' walk or drive of downtown: I-405 leads into Pasadena to the south while State Route 66 heads north into Mojave Desert towards Truth or Consequences Junction where Interstate 10 meets US 101/US 95/SR 15 heading eastward towards Phoenix). Additionally, Amtrak's Coast Starlight service operates between Los Angeles Union Station and San Francisco Peaks every day except Saturday during rush hours Trains depart from Los Angeles at 5 p.m., making it easy for locals to get around without having to leave their homes
