From 1926 until 1967 there were several large commercial development projects near Adelanto; these included the erection of Hearst Tower (1926), MGM Grand (1927), and Sun Valley Racetrack & Casino Resort (1968). However many residents preferred to remain unmarried or small-scale farmers who raised chickens or cows rather than become involved with big business. Many businesses that thrived during this time closed down due to changes within the local economy brought on by World War II shortages of materials such as aluminum cans and paper products necessary for war production. As early as 1951 there were efforts to make Adelanto more self-sufficient through land Improvement Districts which would purchase parcels of agricultural land adjacent to school districts so they could be developed into housing tracts For many years ADELANTO had been one of few towns in Kern County without access either to water or sewerage services; however this has gradually changed over time with installation of sewers within walking distance for most residents Since 2000 all but two homes have acceptedIntegrated Water Management System pumping systems
