West Memphis, Arkansas was once a thriving town with a population of over 7,000. However, the area now known as West Memphis was mostly farmland until the early 1800s. During this time, the region was home to many Native American tribes and their hunting and gathering ways were very influential in shaping the region's culture. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now West Memphis were French traders in 1765. By 1810, however, there were already some large settlements in the area including Carbondale and Greenville. The first permanent settler in what is now West Memphis was James White who arrived in 1812. He built a cabin on Creek Road which he named White City after himself and his son James White II. In 1827, John Thornton settled in what is now West Memphis but his farm only lasted for two years because he ran out of money. In 1830, Isaac Goodyear founded Goodyear Flour Mill on State Street which became one of the biggest flour mills ever built. At this time, it was also one of the first businesses to be established in what is now West Memphis Township. A major development that took place during this time period was when railroads began to enter into operation throughout America and started bringing goods and people all over the country. This allowed for new opportunities for business and transportation within the region which helped drive growth along with jobs for those involved with it! In 1868-69, a group of men from Carbondale formed an organization called The Main Street Union to help improve business conditions within town while also protesting against harsh trade practices by local merchants. This led to increased tensions between Carbondaleians and locals but ultimately had positive effects on downtown business operations! During World War I (1914-18), many residents of West Memphis enlisted in military service as well as serving their countieside communities valiantly throughout Europe!
