The town of West Memphis, Arkansas is located in Shelby County and was founded on April 14, 1871. The population was 997 at the 2000 census. It was named for Elijah West, a United States Congressman from Arkansas who served from 1871-1875. West Memphis had a post office operated by the west Memphis mail service since 1870. This service stopped operations in 1907 due to competition from the US Postal Service's Memphis service. The only other mail service that used this name was established in 1901 by J. B. Meredith and discontinued in 1905 because of lack of customers. In 1898, the West Memphis school board voted to rename all their schools after saints or local figures such as Mother Theresa and Stonewall Jackson. However, this vote failed to pass both Houses of the Arkansas General Assembly and no new names were chosen until 1951 when it was decided to name all schools after Fayetteville natives William Hargrave (1847-1922) and Clyde Tomblin (1915-2001). The first house built in West Memphis was built on what is now State Route 221 just northeast of Main Street. This house sat until around 1924 when it was replaced by a larger structure which still stands today next door to Interstate 40/US Highway 66 east of DowntownWestMemphis (). The first post office opened here on July 15th 1870 under the name "Fayetteville". A store called "General Jones" opened here in 1877 which closed around 1914 due to bankruptcy reasons; however, another store called "McAllister's Store" opened shortly afterward.(Everett Waddell) In 1915 Clyde Tomblin purchased land adjacent to present day I-40/US Highway 66 for use as an agricultural area known as Toms River Field;(Clyde Tomblin Sr.)Tomblin also added a hotel/motel on this site later known as Embassy Suites WestMemphis.(Clyde Tomblin Jr.) In 1922 Waddell moved his business into this building which he continued operation until his death in 2002.(Ronald Evers) On July 7th 1934 two African American men were lynched here near current day I-40/US Highway 66 & Broadway Drive after being accused of stealing some chicken food from a white family residing nearby.(Norman Heyward) Several businesses close early during World War II including Merchant Marine Stores Inc., The Jacksons Cigar Store & Newsstand located at I-40 & Broadway Drive closed shop because they didn't have enough material for war production quotas.;(Beth Gentry) After Pearl Harbor both stores reopened but did not sell anything;;(Jerry Gentry) On November 6th 1957 when Little Rock public schools announced they would be closing their doors for three months due to budget cuts; at about 6pm that night three black teenagers got into one car with four white juveniles before leaving down Elm Street towards downtown Little Rock.;(Christopher Darden)(Christopher Darden photo)[Darden photo]
