West Memphis, Arkansas is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. West Memphis is part of the Little Rock–Biloxi metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now West Memphis was made by Rev. John White and his family in 1827 on an acreage purchased from David Whitmore. In 1828, Baptist missionaries John Witherspoon and James Baldwin arrived in the area and began preaching to the local Native American people. They also built a mission house there which still stands today. In 1865, Drury Lane School was founded in West Memphis by Reverend Ira Cline with funding from Colonel Nathan Beale of Biloxi, Mississippi. The school continued to be open until it closed its doors in 1966 due to budgetary reasons. The community was impacted by Hurricane Katrina on August 29th, 2005 when intense winds and floods swept through the area killing more than 60% of the town's population (only 2% were lost due to landslide). As a result of this event, many homes were destroyed or heavily damaged and about 20% of all residents left their homes for fear of being displaced again during future storms or flooding events like Katrina had caused before her landfall. 2 years after Katrina hit - on November 25th 2006 - President George W Bush declared a state of emergency for Pulaski County following reports that water levels rising around West Memphis had become too high for humans or animals to cross without risking serious injury or death . A few weeks later Pulaski County Sheriff Tommy Bryant announced plans for $1 million dollars worth of infrastructure projects aimed at rescuing residents who may have been trapped inside their homes since Katrina's landfall two years earlier: those who could not get out because they were stuck under piles or roofs; those living near wells that had overflowed; as well as anyone stranded outside along U S Route 441 access roads while they awaited rescuers.. These measures became known as "Project Restore". On February 10th 2007 some 500 volunteer firefighters boarded helicopters led by Govt Aransas Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) personnel began attacking large pumps used solely for evacuating citizens stranded inside their homes since Katrina's landfall two years earlier; these giant pumps are now known as "Pumping & Pouring". By March 2007 both Governor Bill Haslam and Aransas Volunteer Fire Department Commandant Bob Peterson stated certain areas within West Memphis would be reopened to traffic within 72 hours should rain permits be received from both agencies... This marks one instance where government assistance has directly helped individuals affected by natural disasters instead of serving as just another spectator sport . By July 1st 2009 all but 50%of public electricity service had been restored following several months-long restoration efforts overseen by then-Reporter Jeff Smith... Officials said Saturday night that work continues on restoring other services such as water lines and electrical grid connection... According to Smith there are still areas that need significant repair including downed power lines and flooded businesses

In October of 1997, a group of people from West Memphis, Arkansas organized themselves to demand justice for the six African-American children killed in a home there just two years earlier. The community's anger was soon stoked by fresh reports of abuse and neglect in the area. On December 3rd, 1997, more than fifty local residents gathered at the home of Mrs. Golden before marching to the Methodist Church located one mile away. There they placed candles on top of an old carpenter's bench and shouted slogans such as "We want our babies back!" until police arrived to take them away. The tragedy that followed is still remembered by many in West Memphis today. Six black children were brutally murdered within months of each other; their killers had been caught but not punished yet. The outrage that ensued quickly turned into demands for reform from all quarters: politicians, journalists, social workers, humanitarian organizations--all with their own agendas at work. And so it continued for nearly three years until finally justice was done on January 28th, 2000 when four men were sentenced to life in prison without parole for each child's murder. Since then, protests and marches have taken place every month outside the state capital Fayetteville; everyday thousands gather together demanding change and JUSTICE FOR WEST MEMPHIS 6!
West Memphis was a small town in Arkansas that experienced some of the worst crimes in the late-1980s. In January 1985, three boys were found tortured and killed inside a home in West Memphis. The case quickly became known as the "Arkansas 3." After the murders, local police began investigating possible links to white supremacists and other right-wing groups. In May 1985, officers discovered a journal entry written by one of the killers which implicated several people in his crime. Two months later, police arrested two men who had been living in an adjacent house at the time of the murders. They charged them with obstruction of justice and murder for helping to cover up the crimes.
