West Memphis is a town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. West Memphis is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Jefferson City, AR Combined Statistical Area. The first residents of what is now West Memphis were Native American people who lived in and around the area for centuries. In 1853, some white farmers from nearby Arkadelphia settled on land that would become west Memphis. By 1860, when change came to Arkansas with the admission of Arkansas as a state, west Memphis was already an established community with stores and businesses. In 1875, three men named James Moseley, John Witherspoon and Robert Oldham founded a grocery store in what is now West Memphis. The store became known as "The Olde Worlde Store." It operated until 1922 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1925, another grocery store called "The Grocery" was opened in west Memphis by George Hirschfeld and his brother-in-law Julius Kuhnthaler. That store operated until 1957 when it too was destroyed by fire. In 1927, several hundred black people from easternArkansas moved to westernArkansas to work on the new cotton fields being developed in Pulaski County at that time. They were given land east of present day Interstate 25 between White Lake Road and Research Boulevard which they christened "The Negroes' Valley". This valley soon became known as "West Memphis", after its location within Pulaski County only 10 miles (16 km) of downtown Little Rock proper and 24 miles (38 km) from Sun Prairie . At its peak during World War II there were over 20 factories producing munitions near WestMemphis – including 11 munitions plants belonging to Boeing Co., 14 Bell Aircraft plants producing bombers for the Army Air Forces (the first jet planes had been produced at this plant), six United States Rubber Company plants making tires for military vehicles and finally one Ford Motors assembly plant making cars during this period). However following US entry into World War II production stopped at all these plants due to wartime restrictions on ammunition production; however fuel shortages did not stop other manufacturers from entering into war-related business such as armsproducer Lockheed Martin Cos., which built B-29s based on designs provided by Grumman Corp..
