West Memphis is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–Central Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. They named their new village West Memphis because of its location on a trading post established by Captain John Wesley Powell during his explorations in 1912-13. This caused an uproar among many residents who felt they had been cheated out of their rightful county seat by Faubus' appointees; however, he later resigned after being indicted on corruption charges unrelated to West Memphis. In 2000, following the local government reform Acts signed into law by Bill Clinton, West Memphis became one of fourteen designated American Indian Tribal Governments (AITG) within the United States Department of Justice's "Tribal Affairs" division tasked with developing initiatives to support AITG members' cultural heritage and traditions while promoting economic development opportunities for tribe members residing on or near reservations administered by U.S. tribes located within states adjacent to Oklahomalahoma Kansas Nebraska Dakota Territory (present day Oklahoma). As part of this effort, AITG representatives were flown out to meetings held in Moscow, Russia with Russian officials about potential business deals between tribal governments and Russian energy companies; these discussions led eventually to agreements between U.S., Russian and Indian tribes concerning sharing resources including coal seam gas reserves off the Utah–Colorado border as well as other resources potentially available on or near reservations administered by AITG member tribes located within states adjacent to Oklahomalahoma Kansas Nebraska Dakota Territory (present day Oklahoma). Today there are over 1,000 tribal citizens living withinOklahomaKansasNebraskaDakotaTerritory(present dayOklahoma), making it one of America's most diverse tribal communities outsideOfIndian Country

In 2001, Huckabee ordered sheriff's deputies to stand down during a peaceful rally against racial profiling. The crackdown led to several arrests and dozens of injuries including two fatalities.
