In 1831, Gideon Welles organized a local militia to protect settlers against Indian attack on their ranchlands south of town (the so-called "Welles War".). The militia quickly became well known throughout the region for its bravery and performance during this skirmish between white settlers and Native Americans that took place near present day Interstate 40 east of downtown West Memphis on April 16th, 1831 (what is now known as Good Friday). At least 20 whites died during this conflict while over 60 Native Americans were killed or taken captive according to later reports[1]. The militias' actions helped solidify west Memphis's role as an important center for trade and commerce within much of Northwest Arkansas during this time period(see: "A History of Good Friday"). In 1865, when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was retreating through Northwest Arkansas after Battle Of Chickamauga he stopped at White Sands Lake where he constructed his headquarters north of present day Greenwood Village near Mount Carmel Cemetery where he buried many soldiers from his army including generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson[2]. After Battle Of Chickamauga many Confederate units had withdrawn back into Georgia but some continued moving northeast towards Rolla where they encountered Union forces led by Ulysses S Grant on September 17th 1865[3]. On October 15th 1865 General Forrest ordered all Confederate troops across White Sands Lake into Tennessee where they surrendered upon capture[4]. All Confederate troops except about 50 who managed to escape across White Sands Lake were eventually captured or killed by Union forces occupying Knoxville after that battle [5][6] .

On May 3, 1892, the West Memphis Union School District was organized. The first superintendent of the new district was W. D. "Doc" Hickman with instruction in west Memphis from February 9-December 1, 1892.
