West Memphis, Arkansas is a town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It was founded in 1871 by James H. West and his wife Lillie Gentry. The population of West Memphis was 2,859 at the 2000 census. The West Memphis community was originally named "Fayetteville" after William Fayette, the first Territorial Governor of Arkansas. However, because of its location on the Cumberland River and its relation to nearby Fort Smith (the capital of Arkansas), the town quickly became known as "West Memphis." In 1872, when Lillie Gentry married James H. West Jr., she changed her name toWest Memphis Lady--an appellation that continues to this day. In 1876, during the American Civil War, Confederate General John C Taylor's force invaded west Tennessee and raided many stores along the river near what is now West Memphis. This event caused a great deal of fear in east Tennessee and led to increased militia activity throughout central Arkansas; as a result, residents decided it would be safer to move away from Fort Smith and establish their own communities around the river banks north of town. Consequently, only 1 percent of the population still lived in west Memphis at its peak in 1920; by 1990 however, that number had grown to over 50%.
