In the early years of the 20th century, West Memphis was a small town in Arkansas. The area now known as West Memphis was founded in 1881 by white settlers and quickly became a center for cotton agriculture. After World War I, the United States military stationed troops in the area, which led to growth in both the agricultural and manufacturing sectors. In the 1930s, an influx of Italians began to settle in West Memphis, and their businesses soon grew into significant contributors to local economy. By 1960, however, many of these businesses had closed or been acquired by other more established enterprises. The Massacre at WSMU occurred on October 15, 1960 when white students from nearby Central High School were killed by black students from WSMU. This event has been cited as one of most notorious instances of racism and violence against minority groups in Arkansas during the late 1950s and early 1960s.
When the bodies of three boys were found in a field near West Memphis, Arkansas on December 15, 1993, the community was shocked. Alleged child killer Jeffrey Dahmer had been arrested and was on trial for the murders of four other children. The slayings reignited an old debate about whether or not black children are more likely to be killed than white children. Many people in West Memphis felt that Dahmer's actions were a result of racism and prejudice against African Americans. The case gained national attention after new evidence emerged that points to several other suspects in the case- including one who has since been tried and convicted for them.

West Memphis, Arkansas is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County and home to West Memphis Air National Guard Base and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. The first permanent settler in what is now West Memphis was James Witherspoon in 1836. He named his tract " land between the Forks" after two forks of the Nile River that crossed his property. By 1840, John Coker had purchased Witherspoon's land and developed it into a town with a post officeick name: "Winchester". Winchester became an important trade center due to its strategic location on both sides of the river where goods could be transported by boat or wagon acrossriver to Cairo or Fayetteville. In 1856, J.P Richardson purchased part of what is now known as Pryor County from John Coker for $20 per acre ($ in current dollars). Richardson decided to name his new county Pryor because he wanted it to reflect his idealized vision of an American society where free white men would live alongside black men without any discrimination or prejudice. This idea quickly caught on among Arkansans and was adopted as the county motto: "E pluribus unum". Pryor County became one of Transylvania County's original counties when it was organized on November 2, 1857. In 1863, Confederate General Pemberton surrendered at Appomattox Court House following the surrender of all Confederate forces in Virginia including Atlanta-based General Robert Ewell who led Confederate forces westward through Arkansas during Operation Crossroads which ended with Union victory at First Bull Run near Manassas Junction on April 14th 1865. As a result of this event West Memphis become one of many southern rural counties that ceded their local governments back to Federal control following the war while most eastern rural counties retained their state government forms until Reconstruction began more than 50 years later. This lack of central government control over these areas motivated some Arkansans to form their own militias called Home Guards which were used primarily against Native Americans living within their borders which also included assistance from federal law enforcement agencies such asthe US Marshals Service
West Memphis was a small community in Arkansas that was the scene of some highly significant events in its history. The first significant event occurred on December 9, 1892 when a group of men and boys were found dead near the railroad tracks in what is now West Memphis. The townspeople quickly came to believe that the death of these young people was caused by supernatural forces and formed a group to investigate. The second event took place on November 3, 1970 when three boys were found drowned near the same railroad tracks as those killed in 1992. Again, local residents immediately began to suspect foul play and formed their own investigative team. Ultimately, no arrests were made in either case, but the community’s suspicions remain alive today.
