It is the smallest municipality in Pulaski County and second-smallest of all Arkansass townships. The name "Van Buren" comes from James K. VanBuren who served as the 24th President of the United States (1829-1837). The original settlers in Van Buren were Quakers from Philadelphia who came to what is now Van Buren in 1827. In 1836, John Ladds laid out a town site on land that he donated to the state of Arkansas for development as a county seat. The first post office was established in Van Buren on October 17, 1839. In 1861, whenArkansas became a Confederate State during the American Civil War, many people moved to Arkansas from Missouri because of its pro- Confederate status. Some men from Van Buren settled down in Little Rock and started businesses there; others moved into eastern Arkansas to help support their families during war time. When hostilities ended and Reconstruction began in America following the war, most of these people returned home but some stayed behind to build new homes and businesses around what is now downtown VanBuren. Some other early residents included Judge Augustus McClellan (1792-1875), founder of Little Rock; JnoMoses Chilton (befriended Abraham Lincoln before he was elected US President; born 1900); WmWiley Hodges (founder of First National Bank & Trust Company near present day Wilson Boulevard and Main Street); Frannie Hopkins (daughter of General David Hicks Randolph Sr., an officer with Confederate forces during the Santa Fe Expedition against Mexico City));and Horace Seymour Phelps Jr.(son of Horace Seymour Phelps Sr.)
