Van Buren, Arkansas is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock-Hitt City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Van Buren settlers were Orville and Wilburn Morse. They came from Boston in 1824 and started a gristmill on the North Fork of the Arkoma River. In 1828 they built a sawmill on White Creek and in 1830 they built a store and post office. In 1836 they acquired much land by purchase from David Cockerill, who had purchased it from John McAlpin for $2,000. The town was platted in 1840 by James Waddell with 8 miles (13 km) of parkland Grants Mill as its center. In 1847 Phebe Blackwell became the first white woman to inhabit Van Buren when she moved into an house on Walnut Avenue. She died there two years later at the age of 78 years old after spending many years living near her brother-in-law Wiley Pryor in Liberal but close to her family's home at Walnut Avenue where she entertained friends nightly to keep them company until morning when breakfast would be served before leaving for their homes early each morning; this social life continued until his death about 1965 In 1865 Union General Nathaniel Banks attacked Confederate General Robert Ewell's army near Van Buren while Ewell was retreating through Arkansas Territory following his failed attempt to storm Fort Sumter in South Carolina; as a result of this attack 10 people were killed, including 9 citizens of Van Buren who were working on Waddell's flour mill just outside town limits when it caught fire; these losses led to increased economic development within the community over time In 1901 Harry Kapp cofounded Kapp Bros., one of the largest cottonseed oil companies west of Kansas City with fields along White Creek near present day Van Buren Kapp Bros merged with Gulf Oil Company in 1938 which led to creation of Gulf Corporation which merged with Mobil shipping Corp in 1951 creating what is now ExxonMobil Gulf Corporation dissolved circa 1984 having been unable to compete against ChevronTexaco Incorporated during that period due largely to rising energy prices
