Van Buren is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock– hatsched district. The town started as a post office in 1881 and became a city in 1907. Van Buren was named for James K. Van Buren, an American politician who served as the 25th Governor of Arkansas from 1893 to 1897 and as United States Senator from Arkansas from 1907 to 1913. The first white person to live in what is now Van Buren was Ezra Wilkinson in 1824. A wagon train of Missourians traveling through Pulaski County on their way to Stroudsburg arrived at Wilkinson's house on October 4, 1824, and he gave them lodging there until they could find someone else to take them across the Arkansas River into Missouri. He then sold his home and started farming with his family near present-day Jacksonville Street and US Highway 66 east of the river. The first white settler in what is now Van Buren Township was Myron Treadaway on February 3, 1832 when he built a cabin on land that later became known as "Treadaway Hill". He also laid out a road leading southward from where he lived towards what is now downtown Little Rock. In 1840, Daniel Boone came through Pulaski County on his way from Fayetteville to Springfield and camped near present-day Jacksonville Street between Jackson Avenue and US Highway 66 west of the river for about six weeks before continuing north along US Highway 66 towards Independence Hall Plantation where he met General Andrew Jackson for lunch at Big Muddy Creek Bridge on April 12, 1840. There are several theories about why Boone chose this location: one theory suggests that because it offered an open view of both Big Muddy Creek (which connected National Road (now I- 65) northwest of Jacksonville Street with Slaughter Shoals northeast of Interstate 20), and Independence Hall Plantation (which had been moved from its original site within miles of Arabic Village south of Commerce City), Boone felt that this area would be attractive to tourists seeking information aboutJackson's visit; another theory suggests that Boone may have chosen this location because it lay within ten miles or so of Fayetteville which was then becoming an important center for commerce due to its location at the junction of two major rivers (the Mississippian River flowing southward through central Alabama while Tennessee ran parallelto it northward).
Van Buren County was established in 1907 and named for General Andrew Van Buren, an American general who served in the Mexican-American War. The county is located on the Arkansas River and has a population of about 33,000 people.
