The shop became a popular destination forArkansas Riflemen (ARs) who would come to buy rifles and shotguns. In 1854, President James K. Polk issued an executive order forbidding interstate commerce with any person owning more than four pistols or eight rounds per pistol without a license from the Secretary of War. As a result, most ARs had to rely on local dealers for their ammunition purchases. John Brown & SonsGun Shop remained open until 1938 when it closed its doors forever due to economic reasons. However, its influence cannot be overestimated; it is generally considered as one of the earliest gun shops in Van Buren

He built a cabin on the bluffs overlooking the river below and named it "New Hope." Stephenson's cabin served as the first permanent home in what would become Van Buren Township. In 1831, Isaac Nolen set up a log cabin near present day Highway 6 and called it "Nolen's Cabin." In 1882, John Van Buren traveled to Arkansas from Missouri to purchase land east of his present-day hometown of Arkansas City. He renamed his new town "Van Buren" after himself and platted it on high ground between the White River and Arkansas City creek. By 1886, about 350 residents lived in Van Buren. In 1909, when Pulaski County was organized into judicial districts within Arkansas Territory (later Oklahoma), Vancleave became its second courthouse when courthouse #1 burned down in 1908 while being used as an jail during prohibitionist fervor preceding Oklahoma statehood. In 1868, Van Buren became president of the United States and he remained in that position until his death in office on January 3rd of that year.
