He named the area after Maurice de Varennes, governor of Quebec during the Seven Years' War. A post office called Van Buren was established in 1824, and remained open until 1959. Van Buren had a Methodist Episcopal church built in 1827 and replaced by a Baptist Church in 1915. The last resident died on July 6th, 2009 within days of his 104th birthday. In 1855, James Kapp founded the town of Rogersville as a cotton plantation community near present-day North Little Rock with 180 African slaves who were working for him on his own plantations west of present-day Arkadelphia. Kapp's plantation failed and he sold most of his slaves to other investors before dying in 1865 from yellow fever contracted while out traveling to purchase more slaves from nearby plantations. In 1880, Ponderosa Industries began operations with their Northern Arkansas headquarters located just east of today's Van Buren business district which remains one of its main employer since that time including three annexations: White Sands (1910), Fayetteville (1921), and Pine Bluff (2008).that remain active today as independent businesses with major companies based there like Verizon Communications Inc., Coca Cola company Bottlenecks Nursery Supply Co., Wells Fargo & Company related services divisions among others
