Van Buren was an important town in the states of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The community was located on the banks of the Arkansas River, about 30 miles (48 km) north ofLittle Rock. Van Buren had a post office from 1851 to 1903. The population of Van Buren peaked at 1,824 in 1880 and declined to 914 by 1930. It is now a small town with a population of around 100 people. The first white person to settle in what is now Van Buren was James Clements in 1827. Clements built two log cabins on the current site of the town. He also purchased land east of present-day Van Buren for farming purposes. In 1830, John Witherspoon arrived from Kentucky and established himself as a trader in what is now Van Buren. By 1840, he had replaced James Clements as the owner and headman of the town. Witherspoon built a new brick courthouse in 1849 and named it after his friend President Andrew Johnson. When Kansas became a state in 1861, part of Arkansas joined it too; this caused some controversy withinArkansas over which state should have jurisdiction over Little Rock, although both states were still part of the United States when their respective legislatures voted to secede from Kansas onMarch 15th,1865. On April 7th 1865 Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 12808 which recognized that Arkansas had seceded from Missouri and ordered all records herebequeathed to that state be destroyed so that no connection could be made between Kansas and Little Rockentity which would later become known as Arkansaworldly embarrassment for Great Britain since its own citizens were trying to prove their loyaltyto America .In 1870s JnoD Peddle moved his sawmill from Fayetteville toVanBuren because he thought there would be more business here than atFayetteville due to increased transportation costs associated withthe war effort being fought abroadand improved road conditions throughoutthe region

Van Buren is a small town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–2011 Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Van Buren was James Gentry in 1827. He and his family left England to come to America and started out west on the Santa Fe Trail. They were followed by others and by 1842 there were over 20 families living in Van Buren. The first school was built near the courthouse in 1851 and soon after other schools were built too. In 1865 a post office was established here, but it never grew very large because most people lived far away from anything major or important. In 1907 Van Buren had its own railroad depot which served as the town's center until 1914 when that depot was destroyed by a fire. The only thing remaining from that Depot are some of the tracks still lying around today! In 1912 Arkansas became one of 32 states admitted to the Union; Van Buren became an official county seat within Pulaski County on February 1, 1913 following designation as such by then-Governor John Crouch III (D). On July 2nd of that year, locals voted to change their name from "Pulaski" to "Van Buren" after Ulysses S Grant's running mate for President in 1864, Andrew Johnson
The Van Buren, Arkansas area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Van Buren County was Nicholas Bryant, who discovered a rich gold vein near present-day Jacksonville in 1799. By 1830, over 200 people lived in the county and it had one of the most extensive slavery systems in the United States. The slave trade ended before Van Buren County was organized as a county, but its economy remained based on agriculture until after Reconstruction when oil discoveries began to transform Arkansas into a leading petroleum state.
