Many people know about the Van Buren Massacre, which took place on November 14, 1871. It is considered one of the most infamous shootings in American history. The massacre happened when a group of men and women were killed by a group of white men while they were taking a walk down the street in Van Buren. The victims included three children and two adults. The shooting has been called the worst mass shooting in Arkansas history. The event started out as just another day at work for the townspeople of Van Buren. However, things quickly went downhill when some white men decided to use their firearms to kill nine black men living inside a local store. This led to an uproar among the townspeople, who began to demand change from their government. eleven days later, on November 17th, 1871, Governor John Jumper convened a meeting with representatives from all over Arkansas to discuss what could be done about this problem. At this meeting, it was decided that more guns would not solve the problem and that more education was needed about how to control these weapons without causing more harm than good. Van Buren is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The name "Van Buren" comes from John Van Buren and his family's land grant to the town in 1821. The first European settlers arrived in Van Buren about 1800 by way of Texas and then on through Arkansas. They were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who began their journey westward as part of a larger migration that included many poor Irish Catholics. The Presbyterian church had been organized in 1792 in what is now Lexington, Kentucky, and it soon became clear that this religious affiliation would not work well with farmers living near present-day Fayetteville and Little Rock because they did not want their children baptized into any one religion. In 1821, two men named John Conyers (1775–1861) and Isaac Brockway (1776–1858) granted a tract of land to the town of Van Buren for $200 per acre ($4 per head). This grant made Van Buren an unofficial village rather than simply a place where people could buy goods produced on the nearby plantations or farms. In 1827, James Waddell (1800–1880) purchased 5 acres from David Whitfield (1794–1868), making Van Buren his permanent home. Waddell quickly became known as one of the most enterprising citizens of the community because he developed new businesses such as wagon manufacturing and banking services; he also built a schoolhouse and other public buildings including a jail cells for local criminals until he was forced to sell them due to financial problems created by railroads passing through Pulaski County at high speed. In 1842, Daniel Webster (Betsy Weber Bradford: 1800–1865) moved to Van Buren from Tennessee with his wife Rebecca after her husband’s election as President revealed deep cracks within Southern society over slavery issues caused by Webster’s opposition back home in Massachusetts! The town experienced some prosperity during this time; however, it eventually declined during the 1840s because of economic problems and lack of development. In 1865, Van Buren merged with neighboring towns to form Little Rock City Councilman James Fenton's hometown of Little Rock.
