Van Buren is a city in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 17,711 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Pulaski County and fourth-most populous city in Arkansas behind Little Rock, Fayetteville and Conway. Van Buren is also home to the University of Central Arkansas. The first known permanent settler in what is now Van Buren was John Baptiste Bourne who arrived in 1822. Bourne's brother-in-law James Cook chartered a small party of thirteen men and women on July 9, 1823 to explore the area which became known as "the Black Hills". They set out from Independence village on July 16 and reached the headwaters of Cache River on July 20. After spending two weeks exploring this new land they returned to Independence Village on August 2 with news that they had found no gold but had discovered an extensive salt lick near present day Van Buren. This led to the name "Bourne's Hole" for this location until it was changed to "Van Buren" by George Catlett when he founded Helena Springs Academy in 1827. A post office called Bourne was established at Van Buren in 1828, and remained open until 1886. A store built by Nicholas Goodrich at what is now Fourth Street and Broadway served as headquarters for local merchants from 1830 to 1840 before being moved east across Broadwater Road into central Helena where it continued under different owners until 1901 when it reopened as The Gilded Cage Store Company (now First National Bank). In 1849 Captain John Chivington founded Chivington’s Ridge Forge Works nearby what would become Chivington’s Pharmacy later renamed First National Pharmacy & Drugs Incorporated after First National bought out Captain John Chivington’s interest in 1850. In 1870 Jno Clements formed Clements Land & Buildings company which developed much of downtown including present day Third Street between Cherry and Elm Streets; erected several churches including First Methodist; organized first water works west of town; became largest insurance carrier west of Memphis In 1880 H W Ballinger organized balloting for election as Mayor which won by acclamation over George Dabney who had been nominated by Councilman Prentice Meeks After leaving politics Ballinger served as Postmaster general from 1889–1893 during Grover Cleveland’s administration In 1893 General Electric Co., predecessor of GE Capital Corporation purchased Food Trust mill complex comprising brick buildings facing 3rd Street east of Market street from H W Ballinger for $2 million with intent to develop into a major food processing center However due largely because lack of capital GE abandoned plans after two years only erecting one buildingorname still standing today: Second National Bank Building

However, Union troops did not fire on these Confederate forces; instead they arrested many of them and returned them to their homes. Van Buren remains one of only a few small towns located within easy reach of Little Rock for all types of people due to its location on both sides of the Arkansas River - just north of Interstate 25 and east of Interstate 40 - making it an important transportation hub for goods and passengers moving between Little Rock and other parts of Arkansas. This proximity also made it an attractive place for businesspeople interested in doing commerce out-of-state or beyond; such entrepreneurs opened up several businesses that still operate today including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company (FNB) & Robinson’s Valley Bank), a grocery store/market (Arkansas Co-operative Grocery Stores Inc.), three auto dealerships (Ford Motor Company 2nd dealership cornered by Jiffy Lube Service Station), five brothels/lady bars across from each other on Main Street until 1978 when all but one closed down because zoning changes became effective requiring more restrictive building ordinances downtown which have had a negative impact on economic development over time; however there are currently six functioning churches located within walking distance according to 2010 Census data In addition to its role as an important commercial center for much of northwestern Pulaski County during the 20th century it also experienced some significant growth in educational institutions through Central State University which grew from one student body with fourteen students in 1909 to nearly 300 students present by 1970 when it merged with Arkadelphia College . Also developing rapidly during this period were professional medical facilities such as First Baptist Hospital which moved into new quarters adjacent to Central State University becoming one of first hospitals west Of The Mississippi ; Third Baptist Hospital relocated next door adjoining First Baptist Hospital while Arkadelphia College established itself asone major medical school offering graduate education up until recently . Additionally VanBuren has seen increasing activity level associated with military units stationed here throughout World War II including Naval Air Station West Point where jet fighters were manufactured starting in 1948 until 1998 when it was closed due primarily to budget cuts ; now Fort Riley occupies most acreage once occupied by NAS West Point . Finally, pulp mills situated around town have continued providing jobs throughout recent decades although output has decreased somewhat due largely to environmental concerns

Van Buren was founded in 1821 by John Van Buren and his brother, James. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s as cotton plantations were developed in the area.
