In 1973–1974 (following passage of the Arkansas Supreme Court's decision "Hecht v Ewing"), local white supremacists protested against integration efforts by All White Citizens' Committee members who had gathered signatures to force incorporation intoLittle Rock; this led to violence and one person injured after a protest march through downtown Van Buren turned violent when demonstrators encountered counterdemonstrators who threw rocks and bottles at them while police stood idly by
Governor James K. Polk, who was a Democrat, claimed Van Buren in the 1840s as his own. The town of Van Buren was founded by John Wesley Hardin in 1839 and became an important center for the cotton industry. American Civil War veteran General Forrest relocated to Van Buren in 1865 and helped found the first black college in Arkansas.
