Van Buren is a town in Searcy County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first person to settle in Van Buren was French Canadian Pierre-Jean Coteaux in 1821. He and his family built a cabin on a bend in the Arkansas River. A post office was established in 1825, and by 1830 there were five houses in the town. In 1836, John Hays set up a store near the present day intersection of Kato road and State Road 934. By 1840, Van Buren had 10 residents and two stores. In 1848, James Fenton purchased land east of Van Buren from Captain John Waddell for $2 per acre. Fenton laid out a town grid on his land with seven square blocks that include what is now downtown Van Buren (the oldest section of which still stands). The first school was opened in 1850; it served as an academy until 1861 when it became a high school under control of the county seat of Searcy County (which then moved to Little Rock). By 1860, most of what is today downtown Van Buren had been erected including several frame buildings used as warehouse space and one brick building which served as courthouse/ jail from 1865 until its closure in 1930 One important development around this time was the opening of wagon roads connecting Arkadelphia with various points westward including Bentonville where General William Tecumseh Sherman's army halted en route to Mexico City during World War II . These roads helped haul goods between these points along with passengers who could cross over on makeshift bridges or wagons pulled by horses
