In 1861, Abraham Lincoln's nominee for Governor of Arkansas, Gideon Welles (an American lawyer from Hannibal), visited Van Buren to campaign for him. On November 3rd he delivered a speech at the depot on Main Street which has been reported as saying "this state must be saved from secession or destruction by force if necessary." This endorsement led to Welles being invited to become an elector for Lincoln on December 5th and he cast his vote that day for Lincoln at Springfield's State House Annex where he also donated $1,000 towards building an amphitheater there. After this visit welles returned to New York City and started work on developing land near Arkadelphia which would house his new tannery company

Van Buren was a small town in central Arkansas, founded in 1836 by John Van Buren and his wife, Nancy. The Van Buren family had come to the area from Kentucky. In 1838, the first school in Van Buren was built; it was opened by Rev. James Caldwell. The town grew quickly, and by 1840 there were ten residents. In 1846, the first railroad reached Van Buren; it helped to spur the town's growth. By 1850, Van Buren had a population of thirty-six people. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States; during his term (1865-1869), he visited Van Buren several times and donated land for a public square in the town center. In 1870, three brothers named Elder Waddell bought ninety acres of land in corner of Main Street and Elm Street NW from Joseph Hines for $1 million dollars. They began to develop this property into what is now known as Walnut Hills Park. When they died in 1887 their estate passed down through their children until it came into being as Walnut Hills Park Memorial Forest Preserve on July 1st 1922 following an agreement betweenCongressional President Warren G Harding and Drs Augustus Wolfe Thornburgh (manager)and Edwin Ladd (president) over control of part of Walnut Hills Park which at that time lay within Mr.?Edwards request described as "a tract lying eastwest commencing at Calhoun avenue near which point extending northeasterly thence southwesterly then northwesterly along Mr.?Edwards Request line to expire at Acton street." The original owners were: Elders Waddellbrothers Isaac Newton Waddell Elihu Newton Davenport Washington Sr., Jr,, Lewis Cassius Clay Sr., James Clay Davenport Washington Sr..Harding said "Walnut Hills Park Memorial Forest Preserve should be kept open not only for its historical interest but also for its recreational opportunities." Walnut Hills Park has been managed by USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service since 1922
