Van Buren is a town in Pulaski County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–South Little Rock, AR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town takes its name from President James K. Polk who was born in nearby Pine Bluff in 1845 and died there in 1923. Van Buren is located on U.S.-Route 24 south of the Arkansas River and west ofLittle Rock. Interstate 40 passes through the town to the north and east, while State- Route 151 runs along its southern border. The first settler in what would become Van Buren was John Gentry who arrived around 1800 followed by his brother George Gentry about 1810. A post office called Gentryville was established in 1813, but it failed to take hold and was discontinued about 1840. A store called Store House was built near present day Springdale Avenue in 1824 by Nicholas Purdy; it failed to take hold too and therefore did not survive into history. George Witherspoon settled here about 1830 with his wife Sarah Witherspoon Heitman among others having come down from Tennessee looking for land to settle after being driven off their lands by Indian raids during theCheyenne Wars of 1868-1869 which led to a treaty ceding most of western Kansas to Mexico under US leadership thereby preventing any further Native American attacks on white settlers living within that region since they were now part of Mexico instead of America In 1830 Isaac Winchester purchased 1 acre (0 hectares) adjoining Witherspoon's farmstead for $5 per acre ($ 25 000 / km²). The first house built here was anLog cabin or log shanty known as " White's Cabin" which stood approximately where Main Street meets Northwest Highway today Some time between 1830 and 1840 James Korth deeds 3 rods (yds) bordered on each side by Hwy 24 & NW Hwy 151 unnamed lot next door containing approx . 20 acres soon became known as Van Buren Landing lots adjacent SW & SE corner Fords end 6 rods bordered NW & NE corner also mentioned early were: Banks Plantation lots also owned by James Korth including: Anson Ford Lots one block ESE Corner Fords End Lots owned by Andrew Napier two blocks NNW Corner Fords End Lots Owned Hooker family 4 rods NE corner aforesaid parcels were surveyed for Townsite Connecting Rd plat survey map dated Apr 3 1850 shows many changes had occurred since plat survey date

Van Buren was a slaveholding and Confederate States of America state located in the American South. It was named for James K. Van Buren, an early settler in the area. The city of Jeffersonville was founded in 1837 by Stephen Fayette Butler, who purchased land from the Creek Nation. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s due to its location near two major railroad lines and its access to trade with Missouri and Texas. In 1849, Van Buren became one of the first Arkansas towns to be admitted to the Union as a result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. After his election as President in 1856, Van Buren pushed for heavy tariffs on imported items, which helped boost Arkansans' economy. He also promoted public education and social welfare programs throughout his term, which helped make Arkansas one of the most progressive states in America at this time.Following his death in 1865,Arkansas passed into hands of Republican Party leaders until Democrat Andrew Johnson took office in 1868 and began an era of Democratic rule that lasted until 1974.
In 1829, Van Buren was elected as the 27th Governor of Arkansas. He served for two terms and is most noted for his role in creating the state's first banking system.
